Simple Hand Puppets at Home

Learn to make and work a simple hand puppet from things you find around your house in one sitting. My dog loves to chew a hole in a tennis ball and I started from that. All ages but little ones will need help in the beginning. The tricky thing is the hole in the tennis ball, if you don’t have a dog. Someone will need to take a box cutter or knife to make a hole safely ahead of time. We will make puppets together, but you will need to round up a few things ahead of time!

Artist, Puppeteer, and Therapist: Jo Ann Kaminsky.

Materials: One tennis ball with a hole in it for one or two fingers, Two socks of different colors, A bandana, handkerchief, napkin or scarf. It will not be damaged in the process, Acorns or small rock, Buttons, Scissors, Needle and thread, Markers, sharpies if you have them. Optional materials: Feathers, pipe cleaners, yarn, ribbons or trim, beads, Glue, fabric glue or hot glue if you have it but white or carpenters glue will work too.

Bring a puppet or two to this workshop. If you have none, use a sock or just your hand! You’ll be surprised. Then you’ll know what kind of show you can make.
